CHAPTER THREE : BUFFETED BY THE STORM

Hubbie woke up on the top of his hill, the next morning. He opened one eye, then the other drowsily. He began to remember what had happened, last night. He remembered a lady in green handing him a stone like no other, that showed the face of his love…Was it all just a dream? He looked around him as the sun was blazing on his head. And he saw…held tightly by his left flipper…the green pebble. His mouth ajar, he rubbed his eyes frantically to make sure it was real. He then looked into the center of the pebble to see the most beautiful girl in the rookery…the girl this pebble was destined for…

‘’Marina…Marina!’’, he smiled, crazy with happiness. He jumped up and slid down the hill on his belly, his heart ablaze with a courage completely new.

(MEANWHILE, IN ANOTHER DIMENSION)

Celene was sitting at her blue-white vanity in her bedroom, located on her star. Normally, she would sleep until night falls (she could only see the outside world at night, after all), but today, she was impatient. She wanted to know what would happen to Hubbie and couldn’t sleep as easily as usual. So, here she was, brushing her hair and wondering what Hubbie, who owned his very existence to her, would do, now. She remembered that fateful night…

(Flashback)

The night was gentle and clear. It was very late, but somehow, not all of the rookery was asleep. She was a female penguin with short, black hair and violet eyes. Hyacinthe sighed sadly as she looked outside…She may had been married in the traditions, something she was, at first, relunctant about, but she was still not worth much, in the end. Her husband left her and, from the look of it, even if she married a second time, no penguin would stay with her permenantly…

For she was unable to bear children…An infertile woman penguin was a bigger disgrace to the rookery than an unmarried one. She was lucky her former husband kept his beak shut about it. She didn’t dare to imagine how would the other females look at her if they knew…Or the thought of being bannished…

A single tear streamed down her face…She sniffed and looked up…A wishing star, like her mother told her, once…

‘’Starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight, which I may, which I might, have the wish I wish, tonight…’’

She prayed on her knees.

‘’I wish to bear at least one egg. Please, have mercy on me.’’

(Timeskip)

Later, that night, Hyacinthe was fast asleep on her nest, in her igloo. At least, right now, she wasn’t tormented by her loneliness...

Suddenly, a hollow of light twinkled and the whole igloo was surrounded by a gentle blue light.

The light made Hyacinthe wince in her sleep. She groggily opened her eyes and saw a blurry, blue, glowing figure slowly walk towards her…

‘’Sleep, caring, sweet Hyacinthe…May your sweet dreams come true, one day…’’, the Blue Fairy Celene said with her softess voice, not to wake her or startle her…

Hyacinthe was still so sleepy she fell back into Morpheus’s arms, smiling at the dream she believed she was having. Celene slowly and gracefully raised her wand…

‘’Hyacinthe, rejoice. For you now bear a son to call your own.’’

With those words, she lightly touched the female penguin’s belly, which glowed with blue-white rings…before they dissapeared, and so did the Blue Fairy…

(END OF FLASHBACK)

Celene smiled warmly at the memory…Out of  all the wishes she had granted over her milleniums of living, only a few made her feel such warmness and pride. It wasn’t everyday that she took part in bringing someone to life. The only other time she did this was in 1883…She hoped that Pinocchio lived a happy, long life and was enjoying himself in Heaven with Sir Jiminy and his family, now…She giggled as she remembered how the little cricket blushed bashfully, whenever she fluttered her eyes at him…

Perhaps, she had thought too much of Pinocchio, when she granted Hyacinthe’s wish. Hubbie and him where so alike. Naïve, innocent and friendly and blessed with blue eyes.

Celene had watched the whole encounter between Haritha and him, last night. She was indeed blessed to have an understanding lord as Master and Creator.

‘’See you, tonight, my miracle penguin…’’
